About the Book of Common Prayer

First compiled by Thomas Cranmer in 1549, the Book of Common Prayer gave English-speaking Christians a shared language of worship. The prayers here follow the 1979 edition used in the United States, which is in the public domain. A collect (KOL-ekt) is a short prayer that “collects” the theme of a Sunday or holy day.
