What does Luke 11:49 mean?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Luke 11:49-51
49-51. said the wisdom, &c.--a remarkable variation of the words in Mt 23:34, "Behold I SEND." As there seems plainly an allusion to ancient warnings of what God would do with so incorrigible a people, so here Christ, stepping majestically into the place of God, so to speak, says, "Now I am going to carry all that out." Could this be other than the Lord of Israel in the flesh?

Barnes' Notes
Verse 49. Mt 23:29. Also Mt 23:30-36.

The wisdom of God. By the wisdom of God, here, is undoubtedly meant the Saviour himself. What he immediately says is not written in the Old Testament. Jesus is called the word of God (Jn 1:1), because he is the medium by which God speaks or makes his will known. He is called the wisdom of God, because by him God makes his wisdom known in creation (Co 1:13-18) and in redemption (1Cor 1:30). Many have also thought that the Messiah was referred to in the 8th chapter of Proverbs, under the name of Wisdom.

I will send, &c. See Lk 10:3; Mt 10:16.

Shall slay, &c. Comp. Jn 16:2; Acts 7:52,59; Jas 5:10; Acts 12:2, 22:19; 2Cor 11:24,25; 2Chr 36:15,16.

Adam Clarke's Commentary
Verse 49 The wisdom of God - These seem to be Luke's words, and to mean that Jesus, the wisdom of God, (as he is called, 1Cor 1:24), added the words which follow here, on that occasion: and this interpretation of the words is agreeable to that of Matthew, who makes Jesus speak in his own person: Wherefore behold, I send you prophets, etc., Mat 23:34. See the note there, and see Bishop Pearce.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Luke 11:37-54

We should all look to our hearts, that they may be cleansed and new-created; and while we attend to the great things of the law and of the gospel, we must not neglect the smallest matter God has appointed. When any wait to catch something out of our mouths, that they may insnare us, O Lord, give us thy prudence and thy patience, and disappoint their evil purposes. Furnish us with such meekness and patience that we…
